Winter Wonderland Opens In London Without Suitable Taxi Facilities

Winter Wonderland opens today without its normal taxi rank located in South Carriage Drive. Instead visitors requiring a licenced taxi to take them home will need to walk to North Carriage Drive to access London’s taxi fleet.

This disappointing news was conveyed to the taxi trade by TfL’s Ranks and Interchange team at  yesterday’s London Cab Ranks Committee meeting. This was the first that the committee knew of the change of rank location. Until that  point the committee had understood that the taxi rank would operate as it has in previous years in South Carriage Drive.

The LCRC yesterday contacted the event organisers to seek the reasons behind the move to  North Carriage Drive instigate the process of getting this very important festive time taxi rank back the better located South Carriage Drive.

The decision to move the rank seems to have come from: Royal Parks, Westminster Council and the event organisers.

London’s taxi drivers upon hearing the news last night were understandably disappointed and angry by the news, making their feelings very clear via social media.

Unite the union Cab Section believes that North Carriage Drive is an unsuitable location because as the public will naturally be drawn to the southern end of  Hyde Park. Not having the taxi rank there will no doubt see people trying to hail taxis at the busy junction of Hyde Park Corner, putting the public at unnecessary risk from traffic and touts chancing their luck.

There are also severe traffic problems at the northern side of the Hyde Park with road works in Bayswater Road and the Mable Arch gyratory frequently suffering gridlock as traffic is drawn to London’s busy shopping district of Oxford Street, Bond Street and Regent Street.

Unite the union Cab Section along with its Cab Ranks Committee partners will continue to work to get this important rank placed back in South Carriage Drive.
