London Taxi and Private Hire – Taxi update

Marshalled taxi ranks

From this weekend the taxi ranks in Bromley town centre will only be marshalled on Saturday evenings although the ranks in the town centre will still be available on all evenings for drivers to use.

From Friday 10 January a new taxi marshalling scheme will start in Regent Street and between 22:30 and midnight the rank near Swallow Street will be marshalled. Then from midnight until 02:30 the rank near Heddon Street will be marshalled. The taxi rank near Heddon Street does not become operational until midnight, when the bus lane ceases to operate, so cannot be marshalled prior to this.

This new scheme is a trial and will be closely monitored to see how it works and if it is successful.

Reporting touting

If you have information about touting or other illegal activity then you should report this to us using the online reporting form on our website here. The form to report illegal activity is under the ‘Report illegal activity’ tab half way down the page.

If you have information about illegal activity then please let us know as this is valuable in helping us and the police tackle problems.

Reminder – Transport for London Taxi Driver Survey

As part of the ongoing work to reduce harmful emissions in London and improve air quality we have commissioned research to investigate the potential for using electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles as taxis (black cabs) in London. At present no electric or plug-in vehicles are available for use as London taxis, but it is possible that suitable vehicles may be available in the future.

It is important that we understand what infrastructure might be needed for such vehicles to be operationally and commercially viable. To do this, we are asking taxi drivers to complete a short survey about their working patterns, working hours, areas worked and where breaks are taken.

A pilot of the survey has recently been conducted to test this. The full survey is now available here and all licensed taxi drivers are encouraged to complete it.

As licensed London taxi drivers, your views on this matter are essential to this research and so we would be grateful if you could complete the survey. Completing the survey only takes around 15 minutes and all results are anonymous and confidential. The results from the survey will be used to help understand drivers’ views on electric vehicles and potential locations for rapid charging points for electric taxis. Once you start the survey you can save it part way through and then return to it later.

Everyone who completes the survey will also be invited to enter a prize draw to win one of two £50 Amazon vouchers.

The closing date for the survey is Monday 13 January 2014.

If you have any questions about this then please do not hesitate to contact us by emailing

Zero Emission Taxis Event

On Thursday 16 January 2014 a Zero Emissions Taxis Event will take place at Potters Field (next to City Hall) and a number of key manufacturers will showcase their plans for a ‘New Taxi for London’.

We have been working closely with the vehicle manufacturers on the development of future ‘zero emission capable’ taxis. These new taxis use the latest technology, have a number of enhanced features and give drivers a greater choice of vehicles. They will also play a vital role in reducing emissions and improving the air quality in London.

This event is open to all taxi drivers and owners and the full details are:

Date: Thursday 16 January 2014
Time: 14:30 to 16:00
Venue: Potters Field, next to City Hall, London SE1 2AA

Archway taxi rank

A new taxi rank in Junction Road, outside Archway Station has been appointed. The rank is operational between 19:00 and 02:00 and is in two portions. The first portion is for one taxi and the second is for three.

The rank is not in a suburban area and has not been designated as an island rank.

Marylebone Station

There are ongoing works in Harewood Avenue resulting in the northbound lane being closed between Hayes Place and Harewood Row but the southbound lane is still open and the taxi rank is still working as normal.

The works are expected to finish by the end of March 2014 and following this the road will be reopened.
