London Taxi and Private Hire – Taxi ranks update

Below is the latest taxi ranks update to help keep you informed. Follow the links provided for more information.

News

Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland opens in Hyde Park at 17:00 this Friday evening. It will be open every day, apart from Christmas Day, between 10:00 and 22:00 until Sunday 5 January 2014.

A taxi rank to serve Winter Wonderland will operate in the same position as last year, next to the western side of Apsley House.

Last year problems occurred with some taxi drivers choosing not to use the designated rank and instead park and illegally rank on South Carriage Drive. This is unfair on the drivers who are using and waiting at the designated rank and it is important that this does not happen this year otherwise it may ultimately lead to the rank being withdrawn.

Garden Bridge consultation

A consultation on a new Garden Bridge for London has recently been launched.

The Garden Bridge will be a new public garden planted on a bridge that links the South Bank to Temple station and the Strand.clip_image003

The Garden Bridge Trust is a new charity, established to promote and seek funding to build and maintain a new footbridge spanning the Thames linking South Bank to Temple and they want to hear your views on this.

The Garden Bridge would potentially affect the Temple Place taxi refreshment shelter, the rank for this shelter and the routes around the area, so it is important that you read the consultation and submit any comments you have.

Further details about the proposal are available on the TfL Consultation Hub here, a Q&A document about the new bridge is available here and a map showing the proposed location of the new bridge is available here.

Roadshows

Roadshows about the Garden Bridge are being held in November and staff involved in the Garden Bridge project will be available to answer any questions you might have.

The last roadshow takes place on Saturday 23 November between 10.00 – 16.00 in the Neighbourhood Room at the Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre, 108 Stamford Street, London SE1 9NH.

How to respond

You can let The Garden Trust know your views by completing the online form here. Comments must be submitted by Wednesday 20 December 2013.

New rank – Charterhouse Street

A new taxi rank has been appointed in Charterhosue Street, EC1M. The new rank temporarily replaces the old rank which is currently suspended because of Crossrail works in the area.

The rank is in three portions, the first portion is for two taxis and the second and third portions are for three taxis each. The times of operation of the rank are:

– Monday – 13:00 to 23:59

– Tuesday – 13;00 to 23:59

– Wednesday – 13:00 to 23:59

– Thursday – 13:00 to 23:59

– Friday – 00:00 to 07:00, 23:00 to 23:59

– Saturday – 00:00 to 07:00, 23:00 to 23:59

– Sunday – 00:00 to 07:00, 23:00 to 23:59

All taxi drivers using the rank must comply with the taxi rank regulations.

Victoria Station

The taxi rank for Victoria Station often moves quickly but taxi queues do sometimes build up with taxis not moving forward immediately. When drivers are on the rank and the queue is not moving forward please could you switch your engine off to avoid unnecessary engine idling as there has been a recent complaint about this.

It has also been reported that at night some drivers are ranking on the station forecourt, despite there not being taxi rank there, and then u-turning in front of buses and leaving the station via the bus lanes/stops. The bus lanes/stops are for buses only and taxis must not drive through the bus station or obstruct buses at any time.

New rest rank – Montpelier Street

The taxi rank in Montpelier Street has now been converted into a rest rank for taxi drivers. The rest rank will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will be for up to three taxis.

Taxi drivers can stop on the rest rank for up to 60 minutes.

Marylebone Station

There are ongoing works in Harewood Avenue resulting in the northbound lane being closed between Hayes Place and Harewood Row but the southbound lane is still open and the taxi rank is still working as normal.

The works are expected to finish by the end of March 2014 and following this the road will be reopened.

Finsbury Park Station

Taxi drivers using the loading bay at Finsbury Park Station must not stop in or block the cycle lane which runs alongside the loading bay. Drivers on the loading bay should also move up as soon as space is available to assist other drivers.

Bressenden Place – taxi drop offs

Please don’t forget that if you are dropping off passengers for Eland House, Portland House or other buildings in the area please do not stop next to or just in front of the lorry holding area on Bressenden Place.

A dedicated taxi drop-off space has been provided on Bressenden Place, before the lorry holding area.

Marylebone Road resurfacing works

Resurfacing works on A501 Marylebone Road (between Enford Street and Edgware Road) will be taking place during December 2013. The works will be carried out in the following phases:

Phase 1 will start on Sunday 1 December to Monday 2 December 2013

– This will comprise of re-surfacing Marylebone Road off slip road Westbound from the flyover to Edgware Road. This will be completed under a full closure of the slip road. Local diversions will be in place via Marylebone flyover, Harrow Road East and Westbound.

Phases 2, 3a, 3b, 4, will start on Monday 2 December to Friday 6 December 2013

– The works will require a lane 1 and 2 westbound closure from just east of Enford Street to just east of the flyover. Phase 4 will also include a lane 1 and 2 closure eastbound from Lisson Grove to just east of Harewood Avenue. Local diversions in place for side roads. Westbound traffic maintained via lane 3. Eastbound traffic maintained via lane 3

Phase 5 will start on Sunday 8 December to Monday 9 December 2013

– The works will require two and three westbound lane closures from outside the magistrate’s court to the flyover.

Phase 6 will start on Monday 9 December to Tuesday 10 December 2013

– The works will require a westbound lane 1 and 2 lane closure from immediately east of Enford Street to east of Seymour Place and an eastbound closure of lanes 1 and 2 across the junction of Harewood Avenue.

It is essential that the road is free from parking to undertake the works safely and if any vehicles parked during the suspended hours, they will be lifted and shifted to a nearby road. Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times during the works. Pedestrian crossings will be closed during certain phases of the works to enable safe working.
