Thieves target taxi drivers in Swanley

Vehicles also broken into in surrounding areas

Kent Police is urging taxi drivers to ensure valuables are not left unattended in vehicles overnight after a spate of break-ins in and around the Swanley area.

Over the past ten days thieves have stolen cash and personal items from a number of Hackney carriages which have been parked outside victims’ homes.

Three break-ins in one road

In Hextable, three taxis were broken into in Claremont Road, on Thursday 30 May. The thefts were reported to have taken place between 1 and 9am. Items stolen included headphones, a men’s jacket and £50 cash.

Between 27 and 28 May £20 was also stolen from a taxi parked in Glendale, Swanley. During each of the break-ins a window was smashed to gain access to the vehicle.

Remove valuables

DS Gary Scarfe said:  ‘We would like to remind anyone who owns a taxi cab to remove any valuable items from their vehicle overnight. Thieves will also target any item which they believe may contain money or other valuables. It is also important to not leave items like bags, jackets or containers on view.’

Steps to prevent crime

Most vehicle crime is carried out by opportunistic thieves. Remembering a few quick and easy security measures can help prevent break-ins.

  • Lock all doors and windows every time you leave you vehicle and if you’ve got an alarm or immobiliser, use it.
  • Take all valuables with you when you leave your vehicle. Remember, sat nav marks on a windscreen or a bag or jacket left visible can make breaking in seem attractive.
  • If possible choose an area to park which is well lit and in view from passers-by.
  • If you have a garage, keep your vehicle locked inside. Consider installing a garage alarm and security lighting to deter thieves.
  • Encourage neighbours to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity.
