Chuka Umunna MP, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary comments on Geely’s purchase of Black Cab Maker

01/02/2013

Chuka Umunna MP, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary, commenting on the purchase of Manganese Bronze by Geely and that its black cab production will be safeguarded in the UK, said:

“Today’s announcement is fantastic news for employees at Manganese Bronze and ends the uncertainty which has been hanging over the factory. It is also good for British industry.
“As the last British manufacturer of the iconic London Black Cab, it would have been a huge blow if production in Britain had ceased and last month I wrote to ministers to express concern at the prospect of production being moved away from the UK and urged them to act.
“We are proud of Britain’s world class car industry. Manufacturers including Nissan, Jaguar Land Rover and BMW have shown confidence by investing in and expanding their facilities here in the UK. Today’s outcome is also testament to the success which can be achieved in partnership with trade unions and employees.”

Last month Chuka Umunna MP wrote to Vince Cable calling for action to ensure the production of Britain’s Black Cabs remains in the UK: http://bit.ly/VzXEp0
