Addison Lee’s demands would be a recipe for travel chaos

18/04/2012

Unite, Britain’s biggest union, which represents London’s bus drivers and a significant proportion of black cab drivers has warned that any plans to relax bus lane restrictions would be a recipe for travel chaos on London’s roads.

The union has condemned the comments by John Griffin, Addison Lee’s chairman, encouraging its drivers to drive in the bus lanes in London. John Griffin has given the Tory party more than £250,000 and used a lobbyist to set up a meeting with Philip Hammond when he was transport secretary.

Unite regional secretary Peter Kavanagh said: “The iconic red buses carry more than six million passengers each weekday.  Relaxing bus lane restrictions would be a recipe for travel chaos. There are 70,000 licensed minicabs in London. It’s simple – the bus lanes cannot cope with more traffic. Ordinary Londoners rely on the bus lanes to get around London and we condem Addison Lee’s behaviour.

“The government and TfL must now make it absolutely clear that they will not bow to pressure from this wealthy Tory donor and keep London moving.”
